Lazy Sunday.

                                                    Blazer: Mango, Top,Skirt,shoes: Primark
Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation 'Warm Ivory'
Mac Studio Fix Concealer 'NW20'
ELF All Over Colour Stick 'Pink Lemonade'
Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner 'Black Ink'
Sleek Lipstick 'Majestic'

These photos were taken just as the sun was going down and I thought I could use some camera wizardry and get away with not using flash. Alas, I couldn't.

Today, was a very lazy Sunday indeed. I slept through my 7am alarm but was woken eventually at 10:45 by the church bells that chime outside my flat every Sunday. I wore this outfit once I finally hauled myself up to my Uni library. Just an every day, casual day time look, but I did like the contrasting burnt orange top against the rich plum velvet skirt.

I'm back home now and have changed into my 'sweats' and my boyfriend's jumper as the flat has gone freezing all of a sudden! (I hate, hate, hate the cold- shame I live in Scotland isn't it?) I've brought the Sunday papers home with me, so once this is posted I'm gonna make myself an Earl Gray and devour them. Later on, I'll do my usual Sunday night ritual of having a long soak in the bath, then slather myself in almond oil, do my nails, and wash my make-up brushes.

How is everyone else enjoying their Sunday???

Wild Thing!

Jacket: H&M
T-Shirt: Urban Outfitters
Leggings: Topshop
Shoes: Principles
Nails:W7

I do apologise for how posed these pictures are. They were taken at five o'clock this morning and, as always, after five vodkas, soda and limes I have a pout to rival Victoria Beckham. My hair is a bit haywire aswell, we went to ABC which is one of my favourite places to go out in Glasgow, but it was brimming with very excitable 18 year old girls who obviously can't handle their drink and I ended up getting a few drinks spilled over me.

Also, I'm really not one to wear a short tunic top with leggings, as my thighs tend to resemble tree trunks at the top, however I always wear this top with my Levi high waisted shorts but I felt for a night time look I needed a change so I got some wet look leggings to make the outfit more rocky. I love my leopard print shoes from principles. Its my go to shoes if I want to 'sex up' an outfit or be quirky when I'm wearing a feminine, pastel dress.

I didn't drink much last night so after sleeping in till noon I woke up fresh as a daisy, which was a nice change- I must be getting old lol!  I've been chilling out for the most of the day but I'm gonna be more active by going to a Zumba class in a bit. And tonight I'm working so that's my day, I may do an outfit post later on once my camera batteries charge up. If not, hope you all have a cracking weekend!

And then there was light

Been shopping today, and after months of resisting new season items, I finally relented and got myself some pieces. And my, its cheered me up no end! This is a pic of my wardrobe they way it was before I added my finds today...

And as you can imagine it's been a bit depressing staring at these bland coloured items for the past few months. Some colour needed to be injected!

I hate wearing  all black- its so boring and does not suit my personality at all. These little beauties are sure to brighten up my day when I pull them on. For bold bright colours H&M and Zara have got the trend spot on. If I had the money I would have bought their whole collection today!

So you could say that's me started with the 'spring cleaning' of my wardrobe, in a few weeks most of the jumpers will get packed away into those plastic thingymejigs that you suck the air out of with a hoover, and more and more pinks, yellows, prints and florals will be added. I can't wait!

Tonight I'm applying fake tan as I've got a night out tomorrow. Its a 21st and when I mentioned this to my mum, she questioned whether I was a bit too old for that! Pfft the cheek!

Also, just cause the shops have closed doesn't mean the shopping has to stop! So I'm continuing with the brightening up my wardrobe theme and browsing online for some vibrant underwear. No mean feat when you're over DD I tell you! But this got my eye from asos, and I also stumbled upon my favourite lingerie brand's- Mimi Holliday- sale. I love this quintessentially french number as well as this leopard print one. I've lusted after these items for the past few months and I can't believe my luck that they are in my size and half price! I'm very much a believer in that you dress from within then outwards. Okay, that probably has  something to do with how nice a person you are but having great underwear is a start!

Monday's Musings: "Real" Women

"Curves are back!"..."Men prefer having something to hold onto."..."Real women have curves"

For tonight's Monday's Musing I want to discuss the concept of using real women as models in magazines. In particular I will be discussing Look magazine, who in conjunction with the tv programme Lorraine, are about to announce the winner of their search for a curvy supermodel to feature regularly in the mag. This innovative change was borne from public opinion, and the increasing rise in popularity of  voluptuous celebrities such as Christina Hendrick and Kim Kardashian, that have meant women's glossies have come under growing pressure to feature "real women" into their fashion spread, that was once the domain of 6:6 models (Six foot and size six).

Hooray, I hear you curvaceous ladies cry, as finally those on the more voluptuous side will be able to get a visual example of how might a fashion piece look on bodies. How often do you love a piece but believe it’s a look only slim people can carry off- hello skinny jeans!  Being a curvy lady myself, I have first hand experience of feeling alienated from fashion after comparing myself to an androgynous figurine featured in fashion spreads. The competition ran by Look promised to shatter the illusion that to sell fashion, the models have to be slim and exceptionally pretty.

And yet, after looking at the finalist featured in their latest issue I am left feeling deflated, conned and patronised. From the eight finalists chosen for the look comp, the vast majority are size 12s, with the largest model being a size 14-16.Countless surveys have shown that the average size of women in the UK to be a size 16. So why do we have a magazine having a competition to find curvy models only to show finalists that are up to two sizes below national average then attempt to tell us this is ground breaking? I think this could dangerously obscure and entrench women’s negative opinions of their bodies when they are led to believe that a perfectly normal size 12 is to be viewed as abnormal.

My main gripe that I have with the Look competition however, is how lacklustre its photo-shoot was. Its obvious from the set the that a minimal amount was spent on the shoot. The theme was '70's safari' and this oddly involves the 8 finalist positioned either sitting on or standing beside a vintage travel trunk. All the girls are dressed in predictable muted tones of black, beige, tan and a touch of burgundy to really go wild. None of the clothes showcased clings to the body, rather they are all loose. In particular model Gemma's size 12 figure is swamped by a baggy black jumpsuit with a high neckline to follow suit. Two of the youngest models (Saskia, 18 and Ashley, 20) are sporting Gok Wan's favourite for the curvy ladies: a wrap around dress. Look always preaches that when young you should be experimental with your look, so why are these models dressed mumsy. And 6 of the finalists are all wearing, horrors of all horrors, chunky tan belts that were last thought as fashionable back in 2004.

Seriously, what's going on here? Did the people at Look think "hmm... okay, lets appease the fatties and give them the chance to feature in the mag, but when they do so we'll put them in the most god-forsaken outfits and spend the least amount of money possible. That way the public will soon bore of realistic modelling in fashion and the norm will resume." Look could have achieved so much with this shoot! They had the chance to show that larger sized models can showcase fashion forward pieces and look amazing in them. Instead they choose a boring fashion fad and dressed the young girls in clothes way beyond their years that gave a subliminal message out to the larger reader: "cover up, wear baggy and dark clothes, and don't stand out from the crowd."

I know a lot of curvy ladies are resentful of this suggestion and are vocal, particularly in internet forums, to inform others that real women have curves, and that men prefer having something to hang onto. But i don't think this is an approach we should be going down. Just because society insinuates that being slim equates to beauty does not mean we should fight back by trying to persuade others to think big is beautiful. Rather, we should be encouraging the thought that individuality is beautiful. "Real women" come in all shapes and sizes, some are built like a tank and can lift more weights than your fella, others are soft and cuddly and have bras that others could use as a hammock. This variation should be celebrated and featured in  the media, but done so full heartedly or not at all. Because us women do not suffer fools gladly!

So what are your thought on the use of curvy models in magazines?
Also, are you, or are you not impressed with my photoshopping skills? ;-)

red and green should never be seen...

To help me recover from my second bout of shingles in my life (Note: I am a chronic hypochondriac and a cold is at worse what I've  got!) I felt the need to get back with nature and blow away the cobwebs. So the man and I partook in a leisurely stroll of our nearest country park. The weather was really good for a change so I decided to try some outdoor shots for the blog and I quite like them. Although my attire for this shot could have been a bit more exciting you must understand that I am currently battling a life threatening illness so comfort is a must! ;-)

After the stroll our blood pressure was dangerously low and only fast food could remedy this so we darted straight to Pizza Hut - you know, just to be on the safe side. From there we headed to my home away from home-the cinema-and watched "The Fighter"   and wow I was blown away! I am no where near qualified to make a critique of the film, however I can say that the acting  from ALL the cast was absolutely terrific, and the story line went above and beyond your typical triumph against adversity type film. I am really not one to watch films that I've already seen but I'm definitely going to get this when it comes out on dvd.

And although I'm sadly too young to recall the furore Marky mark caused with his Calvin Klein advert I'm now off  to bed to have sweet dreams of his biceps from the film.
Nite nite guys
Don't let the bed bugs bite!

James Brown London Review

Whilst sauntering around the hair section in Boots at the weekend my eyes were drawn to their bargaintastic offer of two for eight quid on these little beauties. I am a brand whore when it comes to my hair as the products I use are forever changing and ultimately my decision is based upon how much money I will have in my back pocket in the aftermath.
I'm sure most of you will already have heard about James Brown (the hairdresser) if not, then does Kate Moss' fave hairdresser...wild, curly blonde hair.. done a documentary on Channel 4... ring any bells?
Now I would like to link to his personal website advertised on the side of his products but it seems to be defunct but, if you want, you can watch his documentary on 4od here.

I have aspirations of one day having hair like Brigitte Bardot so the Volume Boost Shampoo  was the first product that went into my basket. From the PR spiel at the back it informs that it is packed with volumising rice proteins and strength building pro-vitamin B5. It also instructs to leave the product on for two minutes to get optimum results and confidently assures that there is no need to repeat the shampooing process.

I had no desire to purchase a conditioner as I already have about three half full bottles from various brands in my bathroom but I was badly in need of a weekly nourishing treatment. This came in the form of Intensive Moisture Mask and contains soy protein and white tea  for their calming properties aswell as shea butter  to deeply hydrate the hair.

So how have I found the products?
Well, I have received numerous compliments about my hair in the past few days, namely alluding to how shiny or soft my hair looked. Being the pernicikity consumer that I am, I believe they should change the shampoo's name from 'volume boost' to 'thickening lotion' as I feel it makes my hair expand horizontally rather than my preferred vertically. It has a rather men's shower gel fragrance to it, and the soft tube container means I often squeeze far too much out than necessary.  But, I am impressed with how bouncy it makes my hair even two days after washing because I ordinarily have to tie it back or wash it every day.

Now reading this back it does seem a contradiction that I bemoan the shampoo's lack of volumising  property and yet I'm impressed with how bouncy it leaves my hair. What I mean by this, is that after immediately blow drying my hair I still have to follow through with backcombing or adding further product to make my hair bigger but I have noticed that although not hugely uplifting the volume that the shampoo does create lasts for a few days without going limp. With other volumising shampoos that I have used in the past I have noticed that although there was no need to latterly backcomb or add product  I did have to wash my hair every day as the shampoo left residue that makes my hair greasy and lifeless. So overall, I would give this a 3/5 rating as its bad points can be evened out by its good points.

Moving on to the intensive mask I'll immediately state that I'm giving it a 5/5 as I really luvve this! Its smell is much more delightful than its predecessor  and left my hair feeling silky smooth. I can't even complain about the squeezy container as it rich formula means its much easier to control the flow of product. In fact I don't think I have one complaint about this mask. Shockeroni or what!

Below is some pics of these products in action. Instead of my hair I thought it would be easier and more dramatic to show you how effective these are on my extensions. Yes, I am well aware that leaving extensions in a plastic bag stuffed in the bottom of a wardrobe is not the best way to care for them. But honestly, I never thought these would see the light of day again as I quickly came to my senses about their use and disliked how fake and 'Barbie' they made me look ( In my defence I got them after an extremely traumatic hair cut that
took my hair from half way down my back to just up by the first of my three chins!).

Pretty impressive huh?
James Brown's volume boost shampoo and intensive moisture mask may not be the holy grail  of hair products, but for the price I paid for them and as probably a one off purchase I am very pleased with my purchases.

Has anybody else tried these products, or can you recommend a brand to try out for Bardot-esque hair?

My Week In Pictures

Hello you beautiful people out there, been a bit in limbo recently but just thought I'd share with you what I've been up to this week, and I'm pretty sure you'll quickly find out from the pics- not a lot!

One.

One.

Two

Two

Three.
Three

One. Pictures are from the Royal Botanical Gardens in Glasgow. I went there to suss out its potential as a wedding reception venue (Note: I am not engaged or planning a wedding- this is just something I do!) as I have magical memories as a child going there in hot summer afternoons and being mesmerized by the exotic plants and the architecture of the gigantic glasshouses. Unfortunately, childhood does tend to leave rose tinted stains on my memory as it was neither mesmerizing nor gigantic. Definitely scrubbed off the possible wedding venue list that I have stored in my head. Nonetheless, it was a very dreich rainy day in Glasgow (surprise surprise) and the shelter and heat from the glasshouses made it a haven to explore and relive some childhood memories. They definitely came flooding back when I stumbled upon the disused spiral staircase as I can remember  thinking that it was a stairway to a parallel universe; think Jack and the Beanstalk. The photo of the staircase is from my hipstamatic app on my iphone. I love dreamy, lomographic photography and all going well with my bank balance I'm gonna get a Diana camera come next paycheck.

Two. I have been living a pretty nomadic lifestyle these past few weeks largely due to my lack of funds but also the weather and tbh its making me depressed. But nothing that a spot of Drew Barrymore and Justin Long can't sort out. I luuuuve this on/off couple on and off screen. But  in particular I hold a special spot for Drew as she's just thee ultimate girl! Girls wanna be her and guys wanna date her. I love that she has the balls to play such gutsy characters and picks films that have real gritty dialogue. If you have already watched it I am of course alluding to the "shut up and lick it" line [*blush*].  The dish that I made was my first attempt at bread and butter pudding a la Deborah in case you haven't quite made that out. I have never tasted it before and I also didn't know what it was meant to look like. We don't like marmalade so I substituted it for strawberry jam but I still felt it would be bland so I added extra cinnamon. Big mistake. That's all we could taste! Oh well, you live and learn. And just to try and ease my guilty conscious after all thus self- indulgence I thought I'd add photographic evidence that I have started back at the gym after many, many months absence.

Three. And finally I'll end with a sweet tale on humanity. I found the above card halfway through a lousy ten hour shift at work. It was a card that had written on the front "To you, yes you!" and on the back "Open me". Inside the card contained two shiny sterling pounds and a sweet note explaining that they just wanted to pass on some joy to the anonymous finder. And that lucky finder was me! I can't tell you how much this cheered me up and especially as it looks like a child's handwriting it really restored my faith in humanity. Okay, that was a bit far but its something that I'm definitely going to think about and try to replicate.

So thats my week so far. Tomorrow I finally going to get my eyebrows threaded and after being inspired by the pixiwoo video of DIY eyebrow tint I may attempt that as well. I'll let you know how I get on.

 Goodnight chickens.
